- You can isolate a variable in a one-step or two-step linear equation.
- You can undo operations in the correct reverse order without losing track of a sign.
- You can check a solution by substituting it back into the original equation.
What the lesson concludes
- Whatever you do to one side of an equation, you must do to the other side.
- Undo addition or subtraction first, then undo multiplication or division.
- Matching signs produce a positive, opposing signs produce a negative, so settle the sign before you divide.
- A solution that comes out as a fraction or a negative number is still a valid answer unless the question rules it out.
- Substitute your answer back into the original equation to confirm it before moving on.
