Converting fractions and decimals

What you will be able to do

• Convert a fraction to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
• Convert a decimal to a fraction by reading its last digit's place value, then reducing.
• Round a non-terminating decimal to the hundredths place with confidence.

What the lesson concludes

• A fraction bar means divide, so the numerator always goes in the division box and the denominator always goes outside it.
• A decimal's last digit tells you the denominator: tenths give 10, hundredths give 100, thousandths give 1000.
• If a decimal repeats instead of terminating, carry it to the thousandths place, then round to the hundredths place.
• Always reduce the resulting fraction to its lowest terms before you call it a final answer.
