What the lesson concludes
- Look one digit to the right of the place you are rounding to: 5 or more rounds up, less than 5 rounds down.
- For fractions, compare the numerator with half the denominator to decide whether to round up or down.
- Front-end estimation rounds each number to its leading digit so you can total quickly and check a detailed answer for a misplaced decimal.
- Keep household anchors for metric units, such as a paper clip for a gram and a pineapple for a kilogram, so an answer in the wrong unit stands out.
- Estimation is a check on your work, not a replacement for the exact calculation the question asks for.
