- Signal words such as first, next, then, and finally mark the order of steps.
- Words like important and optional, or their absence, tell you which steps are required.
- A contradiction is two steps that cannot both be followed as written. A gap is missing information a reader needs.
- Never assume a step is optional or resolve a contradiction by guessing. Look for what the text actually supports.
