What you will be able to do

  • Identify the hypothesis being tested in a described experiment.
  • Name the independent, dependent, and controlled variables in an experiment.
  • State whether an experiment's data supports or contradicts its hypothesis.

What the lesson concludes

  • A hypothesis is a specific, testable prediction, not a question or a hunch.
  • The independent variable is what the experimenter changes; the dependent variable is what the experimenter measures in response.
  • Controlled variables are held constant on purpose so any change in the result can be credited to the independent variable alone.
  • Larger sample sizes and repeated trials make a conclusion more trustworthy.
  • A conclusion states whether the collected data supports or contradicts the original hypothesis, based on the evidence, not on which outcome seemed more likely beforehand.
