What you will be able to do

  • Set up and complete a long division problem for a multi-digit dividend.
  • Turn a remainder into a decimal quotient instead of leaving it as a leftover.
  • Check a division answer by multiplying the quotient by the divisor.

What the lesson concludes

  • The dividend goes inside the bracket, the divisor goes outside it, and the quotient is built one digit at a time from left to right.
  • Each step is the same small loop: estimate, multiply, subtract, bring down.
  • A leftover remainder is not the final answer. Place a decimal point after the dividend, bring down zeros, and keep going until it terminates or you can round sensibly.
  • Multiply the quotient by the divisor to check your work; it should reproduce the dividend.
