What you will be able to do

  • Convert measurements using a dimensional analysis conversion factor.
  • Convert between metric units by shifting the decimal point according to the prefix.

What the lesson concludes

  • A conversion factor is a fraction equal to one, built from two equivalent measurements, so multiplying by it changes the unit, not the quantity.
  • Arrange the fraction so the starting unit cancels, leaving only the unit you want.
  • Metric conversions are a single multiplication or division by a power of ten, matching the prefix (kilo, centi, milli).
  • Standard-to-metric conversions need a given equivalence, which the question will supply.
  • Cancel units on paper (or in your head) before you touch the calculator, so you multiply or divide in the right direction.
